Madekwe was born South London, England into a family of mixed blood. She is English, and her father was Nigerian. Her family was raised on a council estate in the south of London. In the ages of fourteen, she was enrolled at The Brit School. She went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London which she graduated with an BA in acting. While at the school, she was a part-time actor in several stage productions such as the King Henry V playing Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe started her acting career through a short film called Storm Damage. Since then, she has appeared in Teachers, Doctors Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe scored her first motion picture role in the Woody Allen movie Cassandra's Dream, opposite Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. In the wake of that film's success she was cast as Elisha in the single-episode BBC Three drama pilot West 10 LDN which aired in 2007 and she also appeared in six episodes of Trexx as well as Flipside as Ollie. She was Bambi in the ITV2 show Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Madekwe was the main character in 2008's comedy How to Alienate and Lose Friends. Some of her theatre credits include Little Sweet Thing (by Roy Williams) and Flight Path (by David Watson).
Madekwe had her official US debut in the 2009 drama series The Beautiful Life, which only aired two episodes for The CW before being cancelled. Ashley Davenport, a character from ABC's Revenge drama series was cast to play Ashley Davenport. Madekwe was in the episodes of the show's initial two seasons as an regular. However, in May 2013, the word broke that the actress would leave the show after her guest appearance in the premiere episode of its third season. The actress played Tituba in the TV show Salem from 2014 to. Then, in June of 2012 the actress got married to her long-time partner actor Iddo Goldberg. Together, they worked in the film Secret Diary of a Call Girl. He also played alongside Madekwe on Salem.

Ashley Leggat, an actress nominated twice for a Gemini Award, hails from the large Hamilton family. She joined her parents, Roy and Patty and four older brothers -Rob, Brett, and twins Todd and Bram. Ashley lived in stadiums or baseball fields because her brothers, who were all athletic, were hockey players, baseball players, and basketball in summer and winter. Ashley could never walk but she was able to dance. At the age of two, she took up Baby Ballet and fell in love. It was then that she discovered Ashley's love for dancing. Ashley continued to dance competitively throughout high school at the top levels of competitions, such as tap, Jazz, Ballet Pointe, Acrobatics, Pointe Musical Theatre, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and more. Ashley took home the best soloist award at every major dance contest, which included International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers, 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance among a few.
